What are the internship agreements for English students?

Internship agreements are signed training agreements between the university, the company and the student. Not all universities in Great Britain offer students and companies the option of signing internship agreements. At IES Consulting we only work with universities that offer this possibility.

English students usually start their internships between July and September, and sometimes in February. Companies wishing to recruit an English intern are advised to publish the internship offers about three to four months prior to the start of the internship.

Duration - How long does an internship agreement last?

The duration of the internship is determined by the English universities. When the internship starts between July and September, it usually lasts 6 to 12 months, while if the internship starts in February, it usually lasts from 4 to 6 months. Most students prefer to do a 6-month internship.

Schedule - What are the usual working hours for English interns?

In general, the trainees take the working day established by the company, usually full time; although there are a few English universities that have a maximum of 25 hours per week.  The inclusion of the number of hours of practice per week is one of the conditions of the internship agreements for native English.

On the education and work experience of British students

In England and the rest of the UK, education is compulsory until age 16, and most English children attend private or public schools. The English education system is divided into “Key Stages”, from 1 to 5, which correspond to the total number of courses or years (years) up to 13. Primary education corresponds to key levels 1 and 2, from grades 1 to 6 to 11, and mathematics, English and science are compulsory. Secondary education corresponds to key stages 3 and 4, i.e. from grades 7 to 11 up to the age of 16. In Grade 10, they start preparing for the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) exams, after which students are free to choose whether they want to continue their studies in the English education system or start a professional life. For this reason, those who decide to continue their studies at the third or university level begin to prepare for the “A” or “A-Levels” examinations. The higher the score on these examinations, the more likely it is that students will be able to enter the universities of their choice. In these examinations, between 4 and 6 subjects are generally assessed.

Higher education institutions structure their programmes in a two-level framework: Bachelor’s degree (bachelor’s degree; short programmes); Postgraduate (master and doctorate). Institutions determine their own admission policies and there are wide variations in competition for places. Students with English as their mother tongue who come to Spain for an internship are generally undergraduate students.

If you want to know more about the English education system, you can do so on the European Commission’s website.

Bachelor's Degree

The main undergraduate studies are the undergraduate, engineering or architecture degrees. The duration varies between three and four years (some institutions have introduced accelerated programmes that concentrate curricula in two years) and the degree to which they give rise is the Bachelor’s Degree. Grades are divided into Ordinary (minimum knowledge not achieved) and Honours (sufficient grade to pass). Honors may be first class, second class or third class; first class honors being the best grade. Bachelor’s degrees can also be:

Foundation degree

It is equivalent to the first two years of a Bachelor Degree and includes academic education with practical training in a company.

Diploma of Higher Education (DipHE)

It is a two-year degree and at the end of it allows the access to the third year of a Bachelor Degree.

Certificate of Higher Education (CertHE)

It is a year of specialized studies that at the end of the course allows the access to a DipHE or Bachelor degree.

Higher National Diploma of Higher Education (HND)

It is a two-year degree and at the end of it allows the access to the third year of a Bachelor Degree.
